An Overview of Reiki

A living human body radiates warmth and energy. This energy is our life force. Reiki healing is a natural method of touch therapy that uses energy channeled through a practitioner's hands to restore health and a sense of well-being. The inclination to assist another person and provide comfort and reassurance when he or she is physically or emotionally hurt is an innate instinct in all of us. Reiki is based on this instinct. The act of laying hands on the body to comfort and relieve pain is as old as life itself. The first thing most people do when experiencing pain is to put their hands on it. When a child is hurt, the first thing he or she wants is a kiss from Mommy to make it feel better.

The word Reiki is Japanese and is usually translated into English as universal life force energy. Dr. Mikao Usui, an early 20th century Buddhist Monk, rediscovered ancient healing methods. He incorporated and refined elements of these healing methods into a holistic healing process that encourages relaxation and helps relieve suffering.

This system of healing is designed to assist healing and help one achieve balance. It operates through the concept that there is an unlimited supply of Universal Life Energy available to us. The energy is channeled through the Reiki practitioner's hands to the recipient for the purpose of healing the whole person rather than simply relieving symptoms. Reiki harms no one and does not conflict or interfere with any religious beliefs. It is a complementary tool for assisting all other types of healing therapies. You do not have to believe in Reiki for it to work.
